| Nehalem Bay
Wheeler, Oregon June 10 2010 Copyright Trub 2010 Area Paddled: Wheeler Public Docks to the head of the Nehalem Bay Estuary, circumnavigating Lazarus Island, then up the Nehalem River about two miles past the forks. Start day two coastal trip ![]() Sunrise on the Nehalem River at Wheeler, Oregon ![]() Is this the life? A watercolor in the making. ![]() What a morning a little Bailey’s Irish Cream in the coffee. ![]() Turning the corner in to the Lazarus Island Slough. ![]() The low sunrise in the east. ![]() The mountain views. ![]() I was not paying attention to my surroundings and looked up to see this family of Elk. ![]() As I was exiting the slew I spotted this Blue Heron. ![]() I decided to head upriver toured the city of Nehalem. ![]() This Bald eagle was my constant companion as I paddled up river about 5 miles. ![]() Most of the city of Nehalem was built in the late 1800’s and some of the buildings still remain. ![]() Where the North and South forks of the Nehalem river come together I decided to take the scenic North Fork. ![]() The North Fork of the Nehalem River has great views of Onion Peak it is told the Spanish hid gold bullion up in the Native American caves.. ![]() Long tranquil stretches of tree lined river. ![]() On the way back down the river the sun got high enough it made the water sparkle like diamonds. ![]() There is a lot of wildlife along the river like this black Sea Cormorant. ![]() It has been a great paddle today around 14 miles roundtrip. ![]() I am back where I started, the Public Boat Docks in downtown Wheeler Oregon |
